Nothing But Love - New Burning Man 2019 Inspired Mix

10/3/2019

0 Comments

Having just arrived home from another incredible year out at Burning Man, I usually like to throw some tunes together to help sustain the experience as time moves forward. This mix is very representative of this year out on The Playa. It combines tracks of mine that are new sessions of creativity I have been working on in the studio. These represent the structure I was part of building out there and the risk of putting your creativity out there for the world to see. On top of that, there are chances taken with acapella's to create a bit of unexpected magic in mixes, just as there were all sorts of unexpected magic created in the camp & mixes of energy. Old classic favourites are included(even vinyl), with new current favorites, just as this year combined old friends and new friends. A majority of these tracks were played out there in sets, hoping to create a familiarity to those out there, but in attendance or not, I hope this 2+ hours of music can be enjoyed.
Nothin but Love!

New Promo Mix - Joe Long - Make House Deep Again.

9/2/2017

It is time for a new one, 2016 brought "The Heat", now deep into 2017 I put together "Make House Deep Again". It is a collection of some great tunes. 4 of them my own productions, featuring originals as well as edits of Carlos Santana's Evil Ways, Fat Freddy's Drop Flashback, and the rest are some favorites. Tunes from Black Loops, Random Soul, Tigerskin, Joey Negro, Scott Diaz, Art of Tones, and many more talented folks. The whole mix is loaded with funky tracks on a house tip, and has tons of acapella sprinked through it to provide an extra touch of entertainment. Give it a listen and enjoy, the louder the better. Always find more mixes and productions at www.pureliferecords.com. Dedicated to bringing you some of the best tunes in House Music. Cheers.

My House is Dark and My Pots are Cold

New groovy remix of Carlos Sanata's Evil Ways. What a great original. I love all of Santana's work, really ALL. The guy is incredible. When I heard Evil Ways a few months back the "my house is dark" line made my ears hear some potential for a cool remix. That said I started to work on something, in no time the funk came to life. This is just a passion edit, it is for promotional use only, not for sale or download. So simply, click, close your eyes, and listen. It has a nice 2017 House Music feel, but I didnt want to over do anything electronic, and keep a groove intact- the Pure Life way. Thank you Carlos for being the legend you are, and giving inspiration to a world in need, Lord knows we've got to change.

I was just a few days back feeling somethin a bit outside of the house music box and starting working on something a little more mellow and in more of a downtempo state. That said, I bring you "Just Business, Right. Check it out below. I also entered it onto the Scofen platform for their competition. So there are links to that page and the single itself on soundcloud. Check it out and let me know you thoughts, second contest,  can you tell me where the sample vocal came from?

Friends, Family, & Me Is Back Out There

6/1/2017

Had this up on soundcloud for a while but it came down after some time. Figured it was time to shift it over to the more relevant site for mixes (mixcloud.com) so with that said, you can find it there now.

So what is this mix all about,...... Friends, Family & Me is a promotional mix put together for Summertime. It has been mixed and arranged by Joe Long and features a handful of his own productions. In addition to his own tunes, the mix has a number of other tracks produced by label mate Aaron Anderson. as well as other songs sprinkled throughout the mix by very close friends. Hence the name of the title. Tracks by bay area artist/friends Roman Nunez,  Mario Dubbz of Housewarming Music, Stranger Danger, and Luke Murray of Adoptive Funk. On top of that, it would only be fitting to include a pair of tracks by the San Francisco "Godfather" of House, Jay-J Hernandez, who Joe spent years learning some ins and outs of production and house sound from at the infamous Moulton Studios.
Rather than discussing his background, more importantly to Joe, was to have a mix that he knew every person who made every track on this compilation. Shifting the paradigm from competition to collaboration. It is lonely at the top if no one is there with you. He wanted to do all that he could to promote everyone around him that is making great music, so they can all come up together.
The mix features deep, funky, soulful house. With some tracks featuring samples from classic Marvin Gaye, to Gil Scott Herron, to John Coltrane,  a Temptations sample remix competition. even a Rihanna mash up. Give this mix a shot and also google these other artists to see more of the great sounds they are bringing to the house music genre.
Much more important to showcase folks you care about, with that said, enjoy this deep house mix that features tunes by those near and dear. Watch for a volume 2 coming at you very soon as well, as 1 hour mix just scratches the surface of tunes we are twisting on.

Out in The Playa for Da Vinci's Workshop, Burning Man 2016, was Awesome!

Fortunate experience of getting back out to the playa for another incredible journey. Burning Man 2016 "Davinci's Workshop" was as special a year on the playa as any. Here is a short video of Joe Long rockin Dan K.'s awesome remix of Sade's "Smooth Operator" during a 4 hour Dj set on the Bump Bed (the radest car out there) with a bunch of great people. Such a good time to be out there with the homies old and new. Burning Man you continue to feed my soul year after year.

Current Artists Doin Good Work

Pumped that I am finally in a state of belief that music is in a good place. Or maybe I should say a better place, and I'm not just talking about my lovc for underground "deep" house. I'm, on this post talking about mainstream, even pop style artist. My ipod type people, not my DJ set type people.
It has been multiple years of me trashing the radio, thinking that music was awful for a long time. I began thinking that it was my own bitterness or some underlying reason of jealousy or something. Im glad it was none of that, its that the cylce of crap has finally come around.
Just stoked to see that "artists" like Flo-Rida, or Young Jeezy arent dominating the radio, and that people like London Grammar, or Ed Sheeran, even though they are also ultra mainstream now, they are there for the reason that I always hope people make it there. Sure it is still a crap shoot of popularity and connections, but at least the talent is there to show how those connections may have happened. Rather than being, my favorite Dave Navarro T-Shirt that I saw "Talentless, But Well Connected"
So this post is mainly just to give a shout out to those whose music is currently being played that could be heard in a few years, 10 years, 50 years and still have some musical power to it(timeless), rather than current fad that you hear in 3 years and vaguely remember it and realize it may have been a hit then, but it is far from a hit.
So, thank you......

Sam Smith
Ed Sheeran
London Grammar
Florence & The Machine
Poolside
Maribou State
Hozier
Tuxedo
Artic Monkeys
Soul Clap
Cherokee
Black Keys
San Cisco
James Blake
Drake
Lupe Fiasco
Kendrick Lamar
Paolo Nutini
Chet Faker
Bruno Mars
Broken Bells
Wretch 32
The Weeknd
Prince
Daft Punk
Childish Gambino
Even, Rihanna, Kanye, and Paul

And I feel like that is just scratching the surface, this list of people to appreciate poured out in just a minute or two. Where a few years back I would have struggled to make a list half that length.

Indaba Music Jennifer Hudson Remix Comp Entry

I was stoked when I stumbled into this remix oppurtunity. I first heard this song a couple months back in the car on my way home. I loved it. I was so happy to hear a pop/mainstream artist have a release that was housey, and not this modern day pop/club house. This track is like some nice beach house a masters at work(MAW) style or like a Rasmus Faber type jam. About a month later I happen to see an ad on a housae forum site that was advertising Indaba Music doing a remix contest of this track and thought count me in. If getting just the stems from this bangin tune wasnt enough, there was also a killer prize on the line.  Initially I wanted to take it in s real lounge style house that was dominated by vocals, I mean shit its Jennifer Hudson, shouldnt the vocals own it? But then I switched modes thinking almost all submissions are going to feature the vocal and unchopped versions of it, lets mix this up a bit. So I went for a late night underground club style, with the vocal in there but slowly building. It is one I became quite happy with. Give it a go here and for the next couple days you can vote for it and help this one reach the top. The link is just below. Cheers.

The Beatles - Eleanor Rigby - Gets a Pure Life Twist

9/23/2013

Im on travel right now for the next year, currently in Ibiza, Spain. On this trip Im not only looking to party and have good times, Im looking for global inspiration, perspective, and knowledge. I then want to apply it to tracks of mine. Here is a new one to listen to. I heard Eleanor Rigby on my ipod the other day and had a moment that told me it was a must to do a re-edit for. Give it a listen and tell me your thoughts. Ive been a die hard Beatles fan since I was very young. Haven touched any of their material out of sheer respect in the past, but couldnt resist this one. Plus, Im trying to show a new type of respect by featuring it. Not completely finished with it, but here is rough glance.

My Rant on Facebook Turning Everyone Into a Critic

5/18/2013

1 Comment

Usually having a pretty long fuse on things that get me frustrated I wouldn't take the time to write a post like this, but I feel some people need to stumble upon this and get a wake up call. This post earned its right to be written due to the newest Daft Punk CD "Random Access Memories" and the fact that everyone all of a sudden became a critic and figured they would use Facebook as the forum that they would write their article on. I am stoked for them and for the genre that the release has gotten so much hype, it is something they deserve for being the innovators/virtuosos/genius' that they are. And I love the fact that they are pushing boundaries and not conforming to the direction that dance/house/electronic music has been going. The issue I'm having isn't with the album, it is with the listener these days. Like I say my Facebook news feed seems to be cluttered with people who feel the need to have to express an opinion about the album. Seems to be the same posts over and over, someone saying they are unimpressed with the album and then a string of folks offering their take on it good or bad. Here's the thing first off the album isn't even out yet, granted Daft Punk and Itunes leaked it early for us/the public to hear, but that's it. If you express negativity on something you haven't paid a dime for, why are you wasting your breathe? Its not like you didn't get your moneys worth. Secondly, take a minute and let the album marinate in your mind, sure we all have opinions and make snap judgement, but you'll usually find that those opinions change with time or with more exposure. Because you heard the CD at 12:00 doesn't mean that your audience is waiting to hear what you think and have to know by 1:00. We are living in a society that has to hear songs and figure it out right away as opposed to appreciating music. There is a large difference between music and songs and if you say that to people they look at you like your insane. But think about it, songs are filled with lyrics you can understand and a catchy beat that runs for 3 and 1/2 to 4 minute, to where music is an emotional experience that runs for how ever long that artist intends or needs in order to evoke those emotions intended. Today people don't know what to do with music, they crave the song, and it is sad. This new album by the robots is in my opinion an album of music, not songs. Despite my opinion on whether it is good or bad, it is an emotional ride that modern albums lack, so I do tip my cap to that. And with that being said you cant have an opinion on this album sitting in front of your computer with a leaked listen, because it will sound different in your mind if you hear it in your living room vs. running along the beach vs. driving in your car, etc. So I guess what Im getting at if you boil it all down, is the opinions on a true artistic album are not valid yet so save the posts. Give the music a chance to hit you in the right time in the right ways, or wrong ways for that matter, but to force your opinion right out the gates based on a half listen is disrespectful to the artist and to your own mind. Your opinion is a snap judgment, and not credible.
PS. Don't even get me started on the remixes I am finding on the tracks before they are even released. You mean to tell me that your are ripping the song off, cause lets face it, in order to get the stems or sounds to sample you had to download the track and not in the right way, because that is not available to do so yet. Then on top of that you are going to do a half assed remix before the regular/original is even out, just to pump yourself by using Daft Punk's name in the same title as yours. Give the track a bit to become known, get some play, some familiarity before you illegally destroy it. Keep racing using other peoples work, as opposed to being a creator.

This is not me being on Daft Punk's jock even though I do think the album rocks and is fit for a Broadway Musical. I tried to leave my opinion of the album out of it. Wanted to focus on people rushing to critique whether positive or negative. Just relax and appreciate something new. Appreciate that that didn't even exist 2 weeks ago
That's enough for now.......Please tell me if I'm crazy

~~~~~Cheers and love to those who get it~~~~~
Track of mine used in the Davines World Wide Hair Tour 2013 in Paris
This is a clip of a track I have created to be in a segment of the "Davines World Wide Hair Tour 2013" in Paris France.
The concept is something 1920's with a modern twist about it;
As well as trigger a paradigm shift to imagine the possibilities.
Needed to be walkable to models, and fill a hall with a cool vibe.
Give this one a go....
Hoping this album blows the roof off and rebirths quality dance music......Bring Back the Funk...No more electro!
We've come to far,
To give up who we are.
So lets raise the bar,
And our cups to the stars.
She's up all night till the sun,
I'm up all night to get some.
She's up all night for good fun,
We're up all night to get lucky.
MAW - Diamond Life
"She sits alone in a smoke filled cafe,
Watchin the world go by,
She's all of 18,
She's got looks that tell the truth when she lies,
She says shes all that dreams are made of,
And everything you'll never understand,
And since your lost you should step inside and stay a while."
"Welcome to the Diamond Life,
Gonna live it up, gon live it"
Mood II Swing - Do It Your Way
"I need to be in an atmosphere that is FREE..that is OPEN....
that is striving for truth. and NOT someone else dictatin to you
how to do your thing
which you know how to do that better than ANYBODY ELSE."
Learn to Love Yourself.....
Afro Mystic - Rhythm Is
Rhythm
Can you feel it?
As it coats you like a rain
Calling you, gently
Welcoming your soul back home
Rhythm
It wants you, it needs you
It seems to please you
Will you  let it?
It's pulsing, and vibrating
Grinding it's way up your spine
Rhythm
Touches that place deep within
Awakening passion inside of you
Like, dew against the morning sky
Rhythm opens your eyes
Rhythm loves you
Can you feel it?
Blowing your inhibitions away
Like a spindle in time
Rhythm
You feel the heart beat,
moving,
Surrounding you,
Encompassing everything that you do,
Rhythm
From the top of your head
To the bottom of your feet
It keeps the beat
Rhythm
Can you feel it?
Moving around you?
Jay-J and Chris Lum - Back in the Game(this that joint)
"I think music...
Is an instrument...
It can create the initial thought patterns....
That can change the thinking of people."
~John Coltrane
Tarantulaz ft. Monique Bingham - They Forgot It
"It should make you want to close your eyes,
Forget everything around you.
It should make you think your hypnotized,
And music will forever change you.
When you get in good you'll realize,
The beauty of the world before you.
Let the music saturate your mind."
Marques Wyatt - Those That Like to Get Down
Now we must understand that there are 2 types of people.....
There are some people that like music kind of excitable...ok
And there are some other people that like music kind of mellow..ok
What we've got to get in our minds is that if you are a person that likes excitable music, don't mess with the person that likes mellow music, just let him do his thing....ok
If your the kind of person that likes mellow music, don't get on the backs of the person that likes to get down.....
I have written a song specifically for those that like to get down
